In our latest episode of Community Connections, Uplifme’s CEO, Katrina Pratt Roebuck, sits down with Nicole Lawrence-Moy, the first African-American female Executive Director of the Tenant Union Representative Network (TURN). What is TURN?
Nicole explained that TURN serves all tenants in Philadelphia, offering advice on their rights and helping them through the eviction process. One of their primary services is answering the Philly Tenant Hotline, where tenants can receive immediate assistance and be connected to a counselor for more in-depth support.
Types of Issues Addressed
TURN deals with a wide range of issues, from broken windows to malfunctioning stoves. Nicole highlighted the cascading effects of unmet housing needs, such as increased financial strain when tenants have to eat out due to non-functional kitchen appliances.
Recent Achievements and Future Goals
Nicole proudly shared TURN’s accomplishments over the past year, including the successful operation of their hotline, which handles calls from distressed tenants. She also highlighted their upcoming 50th-anniversary celebration and the organization’s plans to increase public awareness and brand recognition.
Daily Tenant Rights Workshops
TURN offers tenant rights workshops every day at 12:30, 3:30, and 5:30 PM via Zoom and in-person at their office. These workshops are essential for educating tenants about their rights and the support available to them.
How to Get Involved
TURN is always looking for volunteers and donations to support their ongoing efforts. They particularly need help around special events and with providing rental assistance to formerly homeless tenants. Visit their website at https://rturn.net/ for more information on how to donate or volunteer.
We are grateful to Nicole for sharing TURN’s impactful work and for her dedication to improving housing security in Philadelphia.
