Welcome back to Community Connections, where we spotlight incredible community-based organizations making a difference. In our latest episode, Uplifme’s CEO, Katrina Pratt Roebuck, sits down with Desiree Murphy-Morrissey, the inspiring founder and CEO of Murphy’s Giving Market, located in Upper Darby.
Watch the full interview here:
Murphy’s Giving Market was established at the height of the pandemic to support families struggling with food insecurity. Desiree, who has dedicated 18 years to fighting hunger, founded the market to ensure that working families, those who had lost jobs, and those unable to find work due to the pandemic had access to essential resources. Many traditional food pantries were forced to close during this time, and Murphy’s Giving Market stepped in to fill the gap.
But Murphy’s Giving Market goes beyond just food. They take a holistic approach to poverty and food insecurity by offering clothing, library books, health care connections, and housing resources. Recently, they even opened a mental health hub providing free or reduced-cost services, including access to black and brown therapists—a critical resource that is often hard to find.
Desiree shared exciting news about their new campaign to purchase their current facility. Initially operating from her backyard, Murphy’s Giving Market moved to a more permanent location with the help of generous donors. However, their landlord now intends to sell the property. To ensure their critical services remain accessible, they are launching a building campaign with the goal of purchasing the facility by year-end.
Desiree’s journey from funding the market out of her own pocket to creating a community staple is truly inspiring. Murphy’s Giving Market embodies the spirit of resilience and community support, offering a beacon of hope during challenging times.
