In our most recent episode of Community Connections, Uplifme CEO Katrina Pratt Roebuck sits down with Rickey Duncan, CEO of the NOMO Foundation, to discuss the transformative work of his organization. NOMO, which stands for New Options More Opportunity, is dedicated to ending generational poverty through a variety of innovative programs and services aimed at young people ages 11 to 24.

Rickey shared insights into NOMO’s comprehensive approach to youth development, which includes after-school programs, financial literacy, workforce development, vocational training, case management, and tutoring. NOMO also places a strong emphasis on trauma-informed practices and advocacy, both within and outside of school settings, and offers restorative justice programs inside the courtroom.

A highlight of NOMO’s initiatives is the Dr. Tom Reed Village, which provides housing for young women ages 18 to 24 who are homeless or transitioning to adulthood. Over an 18-24 month period, these young women receive support to repair their credit, learn financial literacy, gain budgeting skills, and enter first-time homebuyer programs. The ultimate goal is to empower these women to achieve financial independence and homeownership.

Rickey also spoke about the joy and impact of NOMO’s Stay Safe Saturdays, which offer youth the chance to escape the stresses of city life and simply be kids for a day. Additionally, he proudly highlighted the success stories of NOMO’s participants, including scholarship winners and budding entrepreneurs, demonstrating the profound impact of their programs.

NOMO’s commitment to holistic support is further exemplified by their affordable hair care center, which ensures that young people can look and feel their best for important life events, such as job interviews and school functions.
