A Deep Dive into UESF’s Mission and Services

John Rowe shared the core mission of UESF, which goes beyond providing immediate utility assistance to a more holistic approach of stabilization and prevention. “We provide services to keep the utilities on after they’re off,” John explained. “But we realized that stabilization—preventing problems before they occur—is crucial.” This proactive approach has allowed UESF to serve approximately 200,000 people since its inception in 1983.

Elizabeth Kimball, who collaborates with UESF on community engagement and housing stabilization, plays a pivotal role in this holistic approach. Elizabeth’s work, especially through her Writing for Social Change course at Drexel, bridges the gap between academia and community service. “We provide a space for staff to reflect on their daily operations and think about how they can continuously improve,” Elizabeth explained.

Her students get hands-on experience by engaging with UESF staff, helping to amplify the voices of those working on the front lines of social change. This partnership not only benefits the students but also supports UESF in refining their strategies and expanding their impact.

The Family Empowerment Program (FEP)

One standout initiative discussed was the Family Empowerment Program (FEP), funded by the United Way. This program is designed to support families with children in school, ensuring that utility disruptions don’t hinder their education. “We make sure that families have what they need so that children can succeed in school,” John noted.

Accessing UESF Services

UESF has adapted to various challenges, including those posed by the pandemic. While word-of-mouth and their website continue to be key channels, UESF also offers a concierge service through city council offices, providing direct and long-term assistance to those in need.

Whether through walk-ins, appointments, or referrals, UESF ensures that every individual receives the comprehensive support they need. As John emphasized, “We provide not just immediate aid but also the tools and guidance for long-term stability.”

A Collaborative Future

The partnership between UESF and Drexel University exemplifies the power of collaboration. By combining academic insights with community-based action, they are creating a model that not only addresses immediate needs but also builds a foundation for sustained improvement.

We are incredibly inspired by the work of John, Elizabeth, and their teams. Their commitment to holistic support and community empowerment is a testament to the impact that thoughtful, collaborative efforts can have on addressing the social determinants of health.
